Spam messages are among the most frustrating issues that a user
experiences in their Hotmail account. If your Hotmail account is also getting
infested with spam email messages now and then, you can follow the workarounds
provided below to stop Spam email in your Hotmail account.
Ways to
Stop Spam Emails in Hotmail
NOTE: Hotmail is
now replaced with Outlook.com by Microsoft.
1. Block
the Email Address
If you are receiving spam messages from a single email
address, you can simply block that sender in your Hotmail account. Here are the
steps to do so.
·
Select the email or sender you wish to block.
·
Next, select the Junk > Block (or Spam > Block) option from
the toolbar located at the top.
·
Then, select the OK button. The email you would have selected will be deleted and
all future emails from the sender will get blocked from your mailbox.
2. Mark Email as Junk or Spam
·
Select the message you wish to mark as Junk.
·
Go to Junk > Junk (or Spam > Spam) from
the top of the screen. This will move the email to the Junk or Spam folder.
3. Block
all Unknown Senders
·
Go to Safe
senders and domains option in Outlook and select Add option.
·
Next, you will need to type the email address or
domains of your contacts and other people you wish to add. Then press the Enter key on your keyboard.
·
Under Filters, you will need to select from the
given options on your screen:
o
Only trust email from addresses in my Safe
senders and domains list and Safe mailing lists.
o
Block attachments, pictures, and links from
anyone not in my Safe senders and domains list.
·
After that, select the Save button.
4. Use Blocked
Senders List
You can use this feature to block individuals or
organizations. Here are the steps:
·
Open Blocked
senders and domains option and select the Add option.
·
Next, you will need to type the email address or
domain you wish to block and press Enter
key on your keyboard.
·
After that, click on the Save button.
5. Create a
Rule to Remove Unwanted Email
·
Go to Outlook.com
Rules section and select + Add new
rule option.
·
As every rule required at least three things – a
name, a condition, and an action, you will need to provide this much
information. If you want you can also add multiple conditions, actions, and
exceptions at each step by selecting Add
a condition, Add an action, and Add an exception option.
·
After that, press the Save button.
6. Hide Your
Email Address
When posting to a message board, chat room, newsgroup, or
other public websites, it is suggested to spell out your complete email
address. For example, John AT outlook DOT com. This way, a human being will be
able to interpret your address, but an automated program that spammers use will
not be able to identify it.
Moreover, it is also suggested to avoid posting your email
address on social networking sites, job-posting sites, and large internet
directories. If possible, try not to post it even on your own website, unless
you hide it as suggested above.
7. Avoid
Junk Emails or Instant Emails
Spammers get rich when people purchase their “products or
services”. Do not reply to spam, purchase anything from an unknown business, or
agree to keep or transfer money for anyone. Avoid messages that seem to be
coming from Microsoft and ask for your password or threaten to block or
terminate your account or expire your password. Such emails are always fake.
8. Improve the Security of your Computer
If you have a firewall installed on your system, keep your
Windows and Microsoft Office program up to date, and install antivirus and
anti-spyware programs, you can lower the risk from hackers, viruses, and worms
significantly.
9. Unsubscribe
from Promotions and Newsletters
If you wish to stop getting promotions and newsletters, you
can unsubscribe from your inbox by following these steps:
·
Select a promotional email or newsletter in your
Inbox folder.
·
Then, select the Unsubscribe option from the top of the reading pane.
10. Check for Pre-Selected Check Boxes
When you purchase something online
or sign-up for any services, companies sometimes pre-select checkboxes which
indicate that you agree to sell or give your email address to responsible
parties. If you do not wish to receive email from such companies, always make
sure to not select such checkboxes.
So, these are the different ways to prevent
Spam emails from infesting your Hotmail account & you can also contact customer service phone number of Hotmail to fix your issues.
